GEORGE SHOLA Obituary

George Shola, was born on November 22, 1928, to Nicole and Evantia Shola; Macedonian- Romanian immigrants from Albania. After graduating from Woonsocket High School in 1947, George embarked on his collegiate journey and received a Bachelor’s in Sociology and History from the University of Rhode Island in 1952. George then went to study at the University of Chicago and lived in “Windy City” for almost 8-years studying towards his PhD in Sociology; George had to return to Woonsocket in 1960 to attend to his eye health.

In 1963, George began his illustrious career at the State of Rhode Island Department of Welfare until his retirement in 1989. George worked his way up to his first in command for the Providence District, which at the time was the biggest district in the State; George received a master’s degree in clinical social work from Boston University in the early 70’s.

On January 27, 1974, George married his dear wife and love of his life, Evanghelia (“Angie”); they were married for 35 years until her passing on February 6, 2009. George and Angie were avid world travelers visiting almost every State in the U.S. and traveled often to Greece which was Angie’s native country.

George was an active member of St. John the Baptist and Romanian Orthodox Church in Woonsocket since he was 18 years old. In addition, George was an active member of the Masons and until recently still consulted with many Colleges and Universities on various topics.

George always enjoyed researching and studying anything related to business, finance, health, and nutrition. Although living in Woonsocket almost his entire life, he was a passionate and dedicated NY Yankees fan since childhood.

Almost to the end, George maintained an active daily schedule of administrative work and paperwork with assistance from his dedicated team of family and friends. A special thanks to Mary Jane, Georgeta, Joanne, Teena, Gloria, Kathy, and Rudy as well as his doctors and caregivers in recent months.
